Digital Desk, New Delhi. A group of 93 former civil servants has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing deep concern over the developments in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. It says that whatever is happening there in the name of ‘development’ is disturbing. He urged the Prime Minister to work with the citizens of Lakshadweep to prepare a suitable development model, which includes security, better health system, education and good governance, among other things.
In the letter written by the Constitutional Conduct Group, it has been clearly stated that he
These steps taken by the administrator without consulting the people of Lakshadweep and far reaching proposals strike at the basic thread of the society, economy and geographical landscape of Lakshadweep. The island seems to be just a piece of real estate for tourists and investors from the outside world. Through the letter, former civil servants have appealed to withdraw the decisions of Administrator Praful Patel.
Let us inform that Praful Patel has taken over as the new administrator of Lakshadweep on 5 December 2020. He introduced the new draft on 28 March 2021. These include beef ban, ban on contesting people who have more than two children in panchayat elections, arrest of people, lifting of liquor ban and new rules related to land acquisition. All these are currently drafts, which, if approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs, will come into force as a law.
Lakshadweep is a union territory with no legislative assembly. The command of the state is in the hands of an administrator appointed by the President. Praful Patel is being accused by the people of Lakshadweep of “harming the culture, living, eating methods and trying to spread unnecessary fear”. He says that many of the recent proposed rules are “against democratic decency”.
However, Praful Patel has said that everything is happening according to the rules and the voices of protest are rising more from Kerala. He says that only those people are protesting in Lakshadweep, who have a vested interest. Let us tell you that a glimpse of Kerala can be seen in the culture of Lakshadweep. This is the reason why all the parties in the Kerala Legislative Assembly also passed a resolution opposing the steps taken in Lakshadweep.
