Rio de Janeiro. Whenever Lionel Messi retires, it will not be associated with him at least that he could not win any big title for his country Argentina. On Sunday, the 2021 Copa America final, in which he led his team to a 1-0 win over arch-rivals Brazil. This is the first major title of his career.

Angel Di Maria scored the only goal of the match on a long pass from Rodrigo de Paul in the 22nd minute.

Apart from that strike Argentina could not have been able to break through to Brazil’s defence.

Messi himself could not completely cover the Brazilian defense in the 32nd minute and hit Gaine outside the box.

While in Messi’s team, Argentina reached the finals of 2007, 2015 and 2016 Copa America but could not reach the title. Apart from this, Messi’s team also reached the 2014 World Cup final but this time also it was defeated.

Messi had tears in his eyes as the match ended. Six years ago, after losing the Copa final to Chile on penalties, he cried when the bus arrived at the team hotel. A year later, in the 2016 Copa final, he could not stand any further criticism and decided to retire. But then he made a comeback and now made his team the champion.

The last time Argentina won a major international trophy was the Copa America in 1993. At that time Messi was only six years old and Di Maria was only five. (IANS)
