Employment crisis increased again due to lockdown

Author: Rizwan Ansari
Recently, the young son of a retired policeman committed suicide in Baradari area of Bareilly. He went into depression due to unemployment. A similar incident happened in Nagjhiri of Ujjain. There too, due to the lockdown, the employment of a young man was lost and he committed suicide. The same story was repeated in Noida’s Sector 66. According to Mumbai-based think-tank Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the jobs of one crore people have been cut in May.

CMIE states that in the month of April, 70 lakh people lost

their jobs. This month, that is, till the 23rd of May, the unemployment rate in the country reached the level of 10.59 percent, while its weekly rate came down to 14.7 percent. The unemployment rate of 6.1 per cent in 2017-18 was reported to be the highest in the last 45 years. In such a situation, the magnitude of the current situation can easily be gauged. According to the organization, the unemployment rate is increasing in both urban and rural areas, but contrary to the general trend, the urban unemployment rate is much higher than rural. This is the first time since April-June, 2020, that the urban unemployment rate will reach double digits.

Needless to say that the youth of the country is facing the brunt of unemployment for years. How the neglect of the most serious question of the youth has brought us to a turning point, a hallmark of this is recorded in last year’s National Crime Records Bureau report. Presenting 2018 data, NCRB said that more unemployed youth committed suicide than farmers during this period. While 10,349 farmers committed suicide in 2018, 12,936 youths ended their lives due to unemployment. This figure rose to 14,051 in 2019. Such figures show that on an average 39 unemployed youth are committing suicide every day. In such a situation, the question on everyone’s tongue is that what are the state governments, including the central government, doing on the issue of unemployment?

The Bihar government has made a promise to provide employment in rural areas, so that no person is deprived of employment. He has talked about employment generation under MNREGA. It is interesting that Nitish Kumar had said the same thing last year, but somehow only those who returned to Bihar in the last lockdown are not able to get complete work in MNREGA itself. On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh seems to be competing with Bihar in this matter. In the Badaun district of the state, the work of MNREGA has come to a standstill and the laborers are waiting for food. Altogether 1.44 lakh families of the district are facing employment crisis. Twenty youths have committed suicide in Jhansi of UP in the last 16 days, due to which unemployment and domestic discord arising out of it is being told somewhere.

If you return to the city from the village, then the government is preparing to give jobs after online training. There is talk of giving job opportunities to registered youth after 100 days of training through Google Meet, but so far such an initiative has not had much effect. If anything, there would not have been so many suicides because of unemployment. In Loni Kalabhor, Pune, a 38-year-old youth coming from unemployment hit his wife and child with a sharp weapon, then hanged himself.

More or less every state government has its own claims to reduce unemployment, but no one is unaware of the reality of government claims. On the other hand, for the people who are losing their jobs, the central government has not even come out with any blueprint till now. We are adding one crore more youth every year, who are leaving with some degree or the other, and are going to sit at home.
