Children are hoping to get the corona vaccine soon. Another step has been taken in this direction. Delhi-based All India Institute of Medical Research (AIIMS) is also going to start the trial of Bharat Biotech’s Kovid-19 vaccine ‘Covaxin’ on children from Monday. DCGI has given approval for Phase II and III trials of Covaccin on children. AIIMS-Delhi has also been selected for the trial site along with several other institutes. Other institutes include AIIMS-Patna and Nagpur-based Meditrina Institute of Medical Sciences.
Last week, Dr Prabhat Kumar Singh, Director, AIIMS Patna had told that AIIMS Patna has started trials on children between the ages of 12 and 18. After this, the trial will be done on children of 6-12 years of age. After this, children of 2-6 years will be included for the trial.
Recently, NITI Aayog Member (Health) VK Paul had said that the DCGI has approved the vaccine. It has been allowed clinical trials for the age group of 2 to 18 years.
Bharat Biotech’s Covaccine will be trialled on 525 healthy volunteers. These will be taken from different parts of the country. Various aspects will be studied in the trial. For example, how safe it is for children, whether it has side effects or not etc.
