A couple from Gujarat raised Rs 16 crore for the treatment of their five-month-old son’s rare disease through crowd funding, that too in about a month. His son has spinal muscular atrophy, a rare genetic disease. The child was injected on Wednesday at a private hospital in Mumbai.
The child’s father Rajdeep Singh
Rajdeep Singh, who lives in a village in Mahisagar district of Gujarat, said that after a month of child birth, when he felt that he was not moving his arms and legs, he got him examined. Investigations revealed that he had spinal muscular atrophy type-1. In this, the muscles of the body stop working and the patient cannot even breathe. The doctors warned them that it could prove fatal to the child.
The only treatment for this was a one-time Zolgensma injection. Rajdeep, who works in a private company, did not have that much money. So they raised money with the help of a crowd funding platform. It is now expected that his son will recover.
