- ICMR has released new guidelines regarding the imperative of RT-PCR test
- The institution has said that there is no need to take test reports from healthy people coming from other states
- ICMR advocates to increase rapid antigen test in the country
The need to conduct RT-PCR tests for healthy people traveling from one state to another can be completely banned as such tests are increasing the burden on laboratories. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) made this recommendation in its consultation to investigate Kovid-19 during the second wave of epidemic in

Capacity of 1.5 million tests per day right now
The country’s leading research institute in the health sector has said that the positivity rate in the country has crossed 20 percent. In such a situation, the spread of the virus can be controlled only by the arrangement of testing-tracking-tracing, isolation and treatment of the infected person at home. There are currently 2,506 molecular testing labs in the country testing on a few other platforms including RT-PCR, TrueNat, CBNAAT. At present, the testing capacity of the country is 1.5 million per day. For this, labs have to work in three shifts.
Antigen test gets a boost
ICMR said that antigen test for Kovid was allowed in the country in June 2020. However, as of now, this test is limited to only the Containment Zone and Health Centers. The antigen test report comes within 15 to 30 minutes. The benefit of increasing it will be that more and more infected people can be identified and isolated.
