Raigarh
Every day there are reports that children have left their parents to stumble. The latest case is from Raigad district of MP, where the mother of five children is forced to eat stumbling blocks. This mother showed courage and went to the

police and complained. After this, three sons were arrested and explained by the police but they are not ready to keep the mother. At the same time, due to the social fabric, many parents tolerate this. There are two laws that help the elderly.

Let us tell you about those two laws, with the help of which parents can get their rights. One is from the central government and the other is a separate law to help the elderly in MP. In 2007, the Center had to enact the ‘Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens’ Act. In MP also, the Senior Citizen Maintenance and Welfare Rules have been made in 2009. Most of the elderly are not aware of these laws.

Abandonment of the elderly is a punishable offense
Abandonment of a senior citizen is a punishable offense under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act-2007. It is punishable with imprisonment for three months and a fine of five thousand rupees. In this case, it has to be disposed of within 90 days after the complaint is filed. In exceptional circumstances, it can be extended for 30 days. At the same time, the court can order payment of up to 10 thousand rupees per month for maintenance to the elderly in such cases.

Tribunal is constituted in each of the sub-divisions
A tribunal is constituted in each of the sub-divisions to deal with such matters. But in many states, tribunals are still not constituted. Here, the reason is that even today the elderly are being harassed by their loved ones and are eating stumbling blocks.

This is the law in MP
The law has come into force in 2009 for the maintenance of the elderly in MP. For this, every district will have all the District Officers, Maintenance Officers of the Social Justice Department. Elders can lodge their complaint here or with the police. Such offices in the district have been named as Family Counseling Centers.

At the same time, if this matter reaches the court that the court can order the parents to evict them from the house. For MP, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced in 2017 that we will bring strict laws for those who ignore parents.

In 2018, an order was issued by the government to deduct some part from the salary of government employees ignoring parents and give them to them. For this, the parents will have to record the statement before the SDM.
