Shahjahanpur
Today (June 11) is the birthday of Amar Shaheed Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil of Kakori, a resident of Shahjahanpur, UP, who on 19 December 1927 in Gorakhpur jail on the charge of Kakori incident, kissed his name in golden letters. Registered in

Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil’s Baba was originally from Gwalior. His Baba Narayan Lal later came to

Shahjahanpur. Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil was born on 11 June 1897. His father Murlidhar had worked for some time in Shahjahanpur Municipality and later started his own private business. During his studies, Bismil came in contact with Arya Samaj.

He formed ‘Kumar Sabha’ with his friends. After some time Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil came in contact with the eminent revolutionary leaders Lala Lajpat Rai and Lala Hardayal. Inspired by Lala Hardayal, Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil along with young revolutionaries of Bengal like Sachindra Sanyal and Yadu Gopal formed the ‘Hindustan Republican Association’. The purpose of this organization was to overthrow the British power. This was the time when the name of Shahjahanpur was covered at the national level.

Why was the Kakori incident carried out?
The revolutionaries needed money to run their work, after which a plan was made to rob the exchequer. On 9 August 1925, Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil along with Amar Shaheed Thakur Roshan Singh and Amar Shaheed Ashfaq Ulla Khan, residents of Shahjahanpur, looted the government treasury near Kakori. During the incident, a sheet identifying Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil was missed, on the basis of which he was arrested and sent to Gorakhpur Jail, where he was hanged on 19 December 1927. Even at that time, the same lines were on his tongue, ‘Waqt aane de tell denge tujhe o Asma, what should we tell from now on what is in our heart’?

Demand to make the house a museum
A dilapidated residence of Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil still exists in Khirni Bagh of the city. Asit Pathak, the national convener of the Rashtra Swabhiman Trust here, has been demanding for a long time to make his residence a museum. 80 square yards of land was bought by Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil’s mother Phoolmati Devi for five hundred rupees, on which her house is built. Now the demand is increasing that the dilapidated residence of Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil should be made a museum and his memories should be preserved.
