Kisan Andolan News: Rakesh Tikait meets CM Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata, demands support for farmers’ protest

Kolkata
Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait, who has been staging a sit-in on the Delhi-UP border for the last several months, to demand the withdrawal of central farmers’ bills, reached West Bengal on Wednesday. Here he sought support from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the ongoing farmers’ agitation against the Minimum Support Price for agricultural products and the new agricultural laws. He also told them about the problems of the local farmers. Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar says that the central government is ready for talks with the farmers. He
asked the farmer leaders to rationalize their concerns on the agriculture bill.

BKU general secretary Yudhveer Singh said, “We would like to thank Mamata Banerjee for her election victory and seek her support for the move to get farmers proper MSP for their crops.” Singh said he wanted to request Banerjee to fix MSP for fruits, vegetables and milk products in West Bengal as it would “act like a model” in other places.

‘We will play an important role in UP elections’
At the same time, Rakesh Tikait said that even if the central government wants to talk to us, it is ready to talk to them. Regarding the upcoming UP elections, he said that we are going to play an important role in the UP elections because the new agricultural laws are black laws for the farmers. We will put pressure on the central government to end it.

‘We are not in politics, we only talk about farmers’
When asked about Mamta Banerjee’s national politics, Tikait said that we can support only in cases of farmer problem, we are not in politics. Tikait and other farmer leaders have been protesting at the borders of Delhi for the past one year against three laws passed by Parliament. They believe that these laws will lead to marketization of agriculture and also will not provide adequate protection to small farmers from exploitation by big retail companies.
