There has been a big success in the hands of Punjab Police. Police have arrested two army personnel for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence). The accused have been identified as constable Harpreet Singh (23) and constable Gurbhej Singh (23). Harpreet was posted in Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir and was associated with 19 Rashtriya Rifles, while Gurbhej was working as a clerk in Kargil and 18 Sikh Light Infantry.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta said that the two accused shared photographs of over 900 confidential documents related to country’s defense and national security with cross-border smuggler Ranveer Singh in a span of four months between February and May 2021. Ranveer Singh has sent them to the intelligence officers of Pakistan. Gupta said that the Jalandhar Rural Police under the leadership of SSP Naveen Singla had recovered confidential documents related to the working and deployment of the Indian Army from Ranveer Singh during the investigation of a case of NDPS. Ranveer Singh was arrested on May 24 with 70 grams of heroin.

Gupta said that during interrogation Ranveer Singh revealed that he obtained these documents from Harpreet Singh who is his friend. Both are from the same village. He alleged that Ranveer lured Harpreet Singh to pay money for sharing confidential documents related to defence, after which Harpreet also involved his friend Gurbhej Singh in such anti-national espionage activities.

An official statement here quoting the DGP said that since Gurbhej was working as a clerk at the 121 Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Kargil, he could have easily accessed these confidential documents containing tactical information related to the Indian Army. The Director General of Police said that Ranveer Singh used to send these confidential documents to the officials of Pakistan ISI either directly or through drug smuggler Gopi of Dauke village in Amritsar. Gopi had links with drug smuggling gangs and ISI officers in Pakistan.

After Ranveer Singh’s revelations, the police arrested Gopi, who has confessed to sending confidential documents to drug smugglers in Pakistan. One of the smugglers has been identified as Kothar. The other is Sikandar, an alleged member of Pakistan ISI. In exchange for documents, they used to pay heroin and money. The DGP said that pictures of confidential documents were sent through some encrypted (encrypted secure) apps.

The DGP said that according to preliminary investigations, Harpreet Singh of Chicha village in Amritsar and Gurbhej, a resident of Punia village in Tarn Taran, Punjab, got financial benefits in exchange for sharing confidential information. He said that Ranveer Singh gave the amount to Harpreet Singh who transferred it to Gurbhej Singh’s account. Harpreet Singh had joined the Army in 2017 while Gurbhej Singh had joined the Army in 2015. SSP Singla said that both the accused were handed over to the Jalandhar Rural Police by the army officials and further investigation is on to find out the involvement of any other accused.
