The US has placed an order to build a new nuclear air-launched missile amid escalating tensions with Russia and China. This missile will be capable of carrying out nuclear strikes on enemy positions located 2500 km away. For this us Air Force Has signed a deal of $ 2 billion (about Rs 15 thousand crore) with arms manufacturer Raytheon Technologies. The US Defense Department said on Thursday that Raytheon is helping to design and develop the Long Range Stand Off weapon. This missile project is also known as LRSO.
Estimated to be ready by 2027
The work to develop the Air Launch Nuclear Cruise Missile is expected to be completed by the year 2027. After which it will be sent for mass production. The missile, built through the LRSO program, will replace the AGM-86B air-launched cruise missile of the 1980s. The missile is currently part of the US Nuclear Triad, which gives the US the power to carry out air-to-surface nuclear strikes.
New nuclear missiles will be deployed in these planes
The weapon is planned to be deployed on the US Air Force’s B-52 Stratofortress, B-2 Spirit and the future B-21 long-range strike bomber. Unlike other weapon systems, this missile will be deployed first, later trials will be conducted to upgrade it further. It is being told that the missile made through the LRSO program will be capable of attacking the target about 2500 km away.
America is spending 7 lakh crores for nuclear missile
In February this year, the US began an exercise to replace the aging Minuteman III missile fleet. For this, America has made a plan to spend Rs 7 lakh crore. On September 8 last year, the US Air Force signed a $13.3 billion deal to arms manufacturer Northrop Grumman. In which the initial cost of setting up the engineering and manufacturing plant of this missile was included.
Capable of carrying out nuclear strike from 10000 km away
The power of this missile is about 20 times more than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. This missile has the ability to destroy China’s capital Beijing in a moment after being launched from America. This missile is capable of hitting its target with pin point accuracy despite traveling 10000 kms due to the guided system made of state-of-the-art technology. The US Air Force has planned to place an order for 600 units of this missile.
Minuteman III nuclear missile to be deployed
This nuclear missile will be replaced by a fleet of obsolete Minuteman III missiles. This missile will be used for America’s ground-based strategic deterrent. Being an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) class missile, it will be deployed in secure underground missile bases. From where after launching it will be able to attack in any corner of the world. This missile has not yet been named, although it is expected that like America’s old nuclear missiles like Atlas, Titan and Peacekeeper, its name will also include both power and peace.
