Salary controversy: Sri Lankan cricketers will clash with their own board before Team India

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and its cricketers could be at loggerheads again as the players have been given only 36 hours from Tuesday to sign the controversial national contract.

SLC sources said the players are returning from the UK on Tuesday and will have to sign contracts by the July 8 deadline. The player who does not sign the contract will not be selected in the squad for the limited overs series against India starting on July 13.

There has been a tussle between the cricket board and the players for some time over the annual contract. Last month the players agreed to sign a tour contract to go on the tour of England. Sri Lanka suffered defeats in both the limited overs formats in this tour. The tour also landed in controversy after three players were sent home for violating the bio-secure environment.

Meanwhile, the selectors have decided to bring back left-handed batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the team. He was fined $5,000 for not complying with the terms of the contract, in addition to a two-year suspended ban. Before the tour of England, the players had not met the June 3 deadline for signing the contracts. The players had then cited lack of transparency in the process.

Only six players in A grade

The players had said during talks in May that players from other countries get three times the salary offered for them. Sri Lanka Cricket then announced contracts for 24 players in four categories. Of these, there were only six players in the ‘A’ category and their annual salary ranged between $70,000 and $100,000.

Batsman Dhananjay de Silva was placed in the highest paid bracket while the pay scales of the rest of the players were fixed between $70,000 and $80,000.
