The Kerala Union of Working Journalists had alleged that Kappan was tied with a chain in the hospital with a charioteer. Kappan slipped in the bathroom after which he was brought to the hospital for treatment where it was found out that he was Corona positive. The UP government denied these allegations.
Journalist Siddiqui Kappan was arrested on the way to Hathras on 5 October. He was going to the house of a Dalit girl who had been gang-raped in Hathras. The woman later died in Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
