In the Kerala Legislative Assembly, three new MLAs of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have taken oath in the name of God, after which the party will now teach values to its MLAs. The party has decided to impart ‘education’ to the legislators to develop ‘rational and scientific consciousness’. CPI(M) Kerala acting secretary A Vijayaraghavan said, “The new leaders in CPI(M) cannot learn the values of the party so soon. This can be achieved through the education of the party. We need to strengthen the educational programs of the party.” A decision has to be made.”
In May, newly elected Kothamagalam MLA Anthony John, Aroor MLA Dalima and Aranmula MLA Veena George took oath in the name of God. Veena George took charge of the state health ministry.
When asked whether disciplinary action would be taken against these MLAs, A Vijayaraghavan said the party would focus on strengthening education programs for its members.
A Vijayaraghavan said the party would provide education to its members from the state committee to the regional level. “It is very important for a communist to have an understanding of scientific reasoning and that is why the party values this education,” he said.
In the 14th Kerala Legislative Assembly, 80 members took oath without taking the name of God. Another 45 members took oath in the name of God. Eleven members took oath in the name of Allah. Earlier in 2006, the CPI(M) had reprimanded the party MLAs who had taken oath in the name of God.
