Tokyo Olympics: Odisha government to give Rs 6 crore to gold medal winners


Odisha Chief Minister announced prize money for the players participating in the Tokyo Olympics. Tokyo Olympics is going to start from 23rd July.

New Delhi. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday announced cash prizes for athletes traveling from the state to Tokyo. Patnaik said sportspersons who win medals in the upcoming Olympic Games, starting July 23, will be entitled to a cash prize. During a virtual interaction with state athletes, Patnaik said that the state government would provide Rs 6 crore for gold winners, Rs 4 crore for silver and Rs 2.5 crore for bronze. Apart from this, he said that Rs 15 lakh will be given to each athlete from the state who has qualified for the Olympics.

Talk to the athletes participating in the Olympics
Patnaik spoke to international hockey players Birender Lakra, Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo and Amit Rohidas along with sprinter Dutee Chand, para shuttler Pramod Bhagat. Describing the biggest dream for any athlete to participate in the Olympics, Patnaik said, “You all have become role models for the youth of Odisha and a source of pride for your family and all of us.” The Chief Minister expressed hope that the sportspersons would win medals for their hard work, determination and discipline.

These players will participate in the Olympics
Sprinter Dutee Chand has been selected for the Tokyo Games in the 100m and 200m events, while para shuttler Pramod Bhagat has also qualified for the Paralympics. Similarly, Lakra and Rohidas are part of the 16-member Indian men’s hockey team, while Ekka has been included in the 16-member Indian women’s hockey team.
