Another indigenous corona vaccine is going to be available in India soon. The third phase clinical trial of Hyderabad-based biologic E vaccine Corbevax is in the final stages and is expected to be over by July. This can be the cheapest corona vaccine in the country i.e. cheaper than Kovishield. The Center has also made an advance payment of Rs 15,000 crore for 30 crore doses of Corbevax. Let us understand the difference between Serum’s Covishield, Bharat Biotech’s Covaccine and Biological E’s Corbivax and how it works.
Corbivax, Covishield and Covaccine are all three vaccines to protect against corona. The technique of making all three and the way they work is different.
Corbevax is made from a special part of the corona virus
Biological E’s corona vaccine is made from the spike protein, a special part of the Corbevax corona virus ie SARS-CoV2. Actually, the spike protein present on the outer surface of the virus helps it to enter the cell of the body. After entering the cell, the virus infects a person and makes them sick. But if only the spike protein enters the body then it cannot cause any harm. What happens is that when the spike protein is injected into the body, our body’s immune system thinks that a real virus has attacked. Then they start producing antibodies. This antibody protects against infection. Later, if a real virus is encountered, the T-lymphocyte cells of the immune system recognize it and immediately the B-lymphocytes are activated and start producing antibodies.
Vaccines based on viral vector and mRNA technology use a code that prompts our cells to make spike proteins against which immunity needs to be created. But Corbevax differs from them in that it actually injects the spike protein directly. This is also a double dose vaccine.
Covishield based on viral vector technology
The corona virus vaccine being used in India is based on the coveshield viral vector technology. Johnson & Johnson and Sputnik V are also viral vector based vaccines. Adenovirus is used in this, which is actually a virus but it does not have the ability to cause harm. The genetic material of adenovirus is similar to that of SARS-CoV2. Chimpanzee adenovirus has been used in Covishield. To make Kovishield, first the strain of corona virus is made infection-free. The spike protein is later developed in it. Through this spike protein, immunity against corona develops in the body. It also has two doses.
Dead virus has been used in the vaccine
Bharat Biotech’s covaccine is made by inactivating the corona virus. It contains parts of dead SARS-CoV2. When the infected parts of the virus enter the body, they are unable to cause harm, but the immune system considers it to be an external attack and starts making antibodies against it. In this way immunity against SARS-CoV2 develops in the body. There are also two doses of Covaccine.
