World Environment Day: Forgetting nature and running after development is not right

Author: Kalraj Mishra
Environmental protection is the need of the hour for balanced development. As we move forward in the blind race of materiality, we are inviting disasters. The consumerist thinking of development is at the core of the dreadful phase that we are all facing right now. Remember, whenever efforts have been made to speed up development by neglecting nature and life, the entire human race has to bear the brunt of it. In this era of worldwide pandemic, we need to rethink our Sanatan Indian vision of nature conservation along with

development.

Environment means the environment that surrounds man. This is what life is all about. This circle is unbalanced, its result is visible in the form of a disaster. Destruction of forests has spoiled the environment the most. First Taukate and then Yas cyclonic storm is the result of not paying attention to environmental protection. Lack of oxygen was a major problem during the pandemic. Although the production and supply of medical oxygen is a different issue, but it is also true that in normal times we have never been cautious about oxygen. Trees and plants are a big source of oxygen, but under the influence of consumerist thinking, efforts have been made to bring beauty to homes by cutting trees. Although the real decoration of the earth is these trees and plants. The cutting of trees means the disturbance of the entire ecosystem.

How many birds and animals live on trees. Nature is balanced by the biodiversity it is. Trees that feed birds grow more trees. I have felt it myself. There are many species of trees that grow from the seeds released from the stomachs of birds. That is why there is a tradition of worshiping trees in our culture.

Khejri is the state tree of Rajasthan. In the desert, it is said to be the Kalpa tree, which always gives support to the people. Not only in Rajasthan, there is a tradition of worshiping it in the form of Shami tree across the country. More intelligent than us has been our older generation who even sacrificed their lives to prevent Khejri from being cut. The sacrifice made for the trees in Khejadli under the leadership of Amrita Devi is the biggest proof of our thinking related to nature conservation in the tree culture.

We first started the Van Mahotsav here by K.M. Munshi did it. Tomorrow is Environment Day. Then the country had become independent and he became the Minister of Food and Agriculture at that time. Understanding the importance of trees, he first started the Van Mahotsav by planting saplings in Nainital in 1950. The next year in 1951, he came to our Rajasthan and inaugurated the nursery in Jodhpur to prevent the desert from growing here. The tradition of Van Mahotsav continues even today, but it is not enough. It is important that every person living on the earth should plant a tree and protect it. We have to reduce our needs. It has to be understood that the earth is not only for us to live in. It is also for the innumerable bio-organic substances, animals, birds and plants, from which our ecosystem is protected.

The destruction of vegetation means the destruction of our biodiversity and this creates imbalance in the environment, epidemics increase. Therefore it is necessary that we take a pledge to protect our culture of nature and environment. Embrace the idea of development without disturbing the internal balance of nature. Remember, trees and plants not only make the land rich and fertile, but also feed everyone.

Let us take a pledge to work for the entire 365 days by joining our eternal vision of nature conservation, not just one day as the Environment Protection Day.
