Indian wrestler sumit malik has decided to challenge the two-year ban imposed on him for failing a dope test. Sumit will demand a reduction in punishment so that he can participate in the Commonwealth Games next year.
Commonwealth Games 2018 gold medalist Sumit was handed a two-year ban by the United World Wrestling (UWW) on Friday after his second sample was also found to contain traces of the banned substance.
Sumit, who qualified in the 125kg category at the Tokyo Olympics, admitted that he was responsible for the banned substances found in his body but that his intention was not dishonest. He will appeal that his sentence be reduced to six months.
Sources close to Sumit said that he has sent a special supplement to the US for investigation. Along with this, he has also sent the medicine which Sumit had taken so that it can be found out whether that substance has come into his body through them.
“We are preparing the defense and are ready to challenge the two-year ban,” the source said. Sumit was taking a supplement and corona medicine. Maybe through them that substance got into his body. We will demand reduction in punishment.
“We have sought more information from WADA. The amount of the substance in Sumit’s A sample was negligible. We have also sought the details of B sample. It is clear that he is innocent and should not be banned for two years.
Sumit’s ban has started from June 3 and only after he turns six months will he be able to participate in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham from July 28 next year.
